Participants in 2014 Mississippi Freedom Summer Tour
Fifty years ago, some courageous young people and black community folks mounted a voter registration drive, freedom schools, and other projects in the summer of 1964 in Mississippi. Under great risk, they brought national attentio to the plights of blacks in the South and eventually the passage of the federal voting rights act. We are still dealing with similar issues today: voting rights, unequal schools, etc.
Join MCHR for a night of remembering the past with gratitude and looking forward with determination in our struggle for peace, justice, and human rights. There will be a presentation of photos from the recent Freedom Summer tour in June, a short clip of the recent PBS film, “Freedom Summer”, remarks from those who attended the tour regarding its impact, and a presentation of this year’s Founder’s Award to Rudy Simons, longtime activist, former MCHR board member and current MCHR advisory board member.
