MCHR/Ralph Bunche Summer Institute 2018 Freedom Tour

Posted April 28th, 2018  |  News

MCHR is proud to be partnering with the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute to educate 45 Metro Detroit youth from a diverse variety of backgrounds across racial, ethnic, class, relgious, sexual orientation, and gender identities in hands-on social justice leadership tactics fromJuly 9th to July 20th, 2018. It is up to all of us to mentor the next generation of youth change makers to become the leaders in their own struggles!

We need YOUR help in raising $15,000 to cover the operational costs associated with this large and important undertaking. Funds will be used to secure transportation, room rentals, food and beverage, pay honoriums for our educators, and purchase neccesary supplies. Please help us educate these young leaders about the rich social justice heritage of our region and equip them with the tools they need to continue our struggles!

Youth will go on a local Freedom Tour to various sites with historical and continuing civil rights importance including Viola Liuzzo Park, Mohammed’s Temple No 1, the Eight Mile “Birwood Wall”, and the William Lambert Home. Participants on the Tour will take part in experiential educational activities with local activists and educators at each of these sites.

Youth participants in the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute will also attend two overnight educational experiences- one on Wayne State University’s campus in downtown Detroit and one in historic Idlewild, Mich.

Support the One Fair Wage/Michigan Minimum Wage Increase Campaign

Posted April 10th, 2018  |  News

The One Fair Wage campaign is currently gathering the signatures required to place a minimum wage increase initiative on the 2018 ballot.

The measure would increase the state’s minimum wage to $10/hr in 2019; $10.65/hr in 2020; $11.25/hr in 2021; and $12/hr in 2022.

The initiative would also increase the minimum wage for tipped employees to 48 percent of state minimum wage by 2019; to 60 percent by 2020; to 70 percent by 2021; to 80 percent by 2022; to 90 percent by 2023 and to 100 percent by 2024 and thereafter.

MCHR strongly supports the One Fair Wage campaign and the long overdue increase in pay for the thousands of minimum wage workers who are so poorly paid that they struggle to provide for themselve and their families.
