Dreamers have earned the right to have Congress enact due process legislation that will enable Dreamers to acquire citizenship as soon as possible. They have more than paid the price to be freed of the harsh penalties imposed by a broken immigration system that, in its impact, violates the spirits of our most fundamental national values.
These core values are expressed in our Declaration of Independence, our Constitution and its many Amendments that have made us an inclusive democratic nation. We must be guided, not by the defense of bad laws, but by the universal principle that all human being are endowed with the unalienable right to the pursuit of liberty and justice. The guarantee of human rights must be extended to the parents who raised the Dreamers to become “good citizens” in the moral sense of the term.
Let us stop scapegoating immigrants and their children for the workings of a corrupted political system that has created an extreme inequality of wealth among our own birthright citizens. Let us fix the bad laws. Let us fix our nation and free ourselves of the nightmare created by a misguided vision of who “we” are.
Dreamers must re-register for their DACA status by October 5, 2017 or face potential deportation.
Michigan United is holding re-registration workshops every Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM.
At the LA SED Senior Center, 7500 W. Vernor Hwy in Detroit.
“Volunteers at these workshops will screen the applicants, assist the attorneys, answer questions, deliver know-your-rights information, and bring more people into the fight for the DREAM and HOPE acts.”
Michigan United needs 30 volunteers to help us run DACA renewal workshops over the next 3 weeks.
