Another look at the Detroit Future City Plan

FEATURING: PETER HAMMER, PROFESSOR AT WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL SINCE 2003 AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE DAMON J. KEITH CENTER FOR CIVIL RIGHTS.*

This program is a follow up to last year’s presentation: Futureshock. Much has happened in the year since Peter’s discussion of the Detroit Future Cities Plan. There have been massive water shutoffs and the recent move of control of the water department to a regional authority. There is a Blight Removal Task Force and an ongoing bankruptcy hearing in the courts. Will the city’s Plan of Adjustment be found acceptable to Judge Rhodes? If it is found acceptable, will it solve Detroit’s problems? In the face of declining population, shrinking revenues and a city standing in increasing isolation from the State and the Region, what will the future hold for ordinary Detroiters? No Detroiter will be unaffected. Will there be a future for Detroit and what will it look like?

*THE KEITH CENTER IS DEDICATED TO PROMOTING THE EDUCATIONAL, ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL EMPOWERMENT OF UNDER-REPRESENTED COMMUNITIES IN URBAN AREAS AND TO ENSURING THAT THE PHRASE EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER LAW APPLIES TO ALL MEMBERS OF SOCIETY.
