The 2019 Detroit Freedom Tour was co-sponsored by a partnership which included: MCHR; St. John’s Episcopal Church (Royal Oak); Christ Church Detroit; 4-H/MSU Extension and PlanterPlus Group.
The Freedom Tour took place on July 12-13, 2019. A group of 42 people, including both adults and youth, participated in the tour and several pre-tour panel discussions and events.
Over the course of the two-day event, the tour made 18 stops at landmarks and organizations which have played an important role in the civil rights history of Detroit and Southeast Michigan.
The Algiers Motel, Birwood Wall, Viola Liuzzo Memorial Park, New Bethel Baptist Church and the Rosa Parks Institute were among the attractions visited by the 2019 Freedom Tour.
A written and photographic report summarizing last July’s Freedom Tour is available at this link.
The planning has already begun for MCHR’s 2020 Freedom Tour which will again take a group of young Michigan social justice activists on a tour of historical civil rights sites and landmarks in the Deep South. The 2020 Freedom Tour is tentatively scheduled for late June 2020. More information will be forthcoming.
